After months of speculation as to where the five-time FIFA World Player of the Year would end up once Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) suspended its 2012 season, Marta has signed for Damallsvenskan club Tyresö. She rejected offers from a number of Swedish clubs, most recently Göteborg, which is home to 2011 WPS Rookie of the Year Christen Press and former Georgetown star Ingrid Wells.
At Tyresö, the 26-year-old Marta joins her former Western New York Flash teammate and Swedish international Caroline Seger as well as 2011 WPS Most Valuable Player and Spanish striker Vero Boquete. In the press conference today at Tyresö, Marta said she decided to come to Sweden before WPS made the announcement that it was temporarily suspending operations.
